Rebilt of my Hand Warmer Empty Rebilt of my Hand Warmer

Fri Dec 07, 2018 1:32 pm
Today, had my repacking kit delivered by Mr. Postman.
I immediately went to work and repacked the top 50% of the reservoir with Carbon felt;
Fitted 1/3 of a catalyst pad in a spring;
Fiddled the head to make it hold adequately on the warmer (the spring diameter made it difficult to snugly fit the head on the warmer);
Loaded the warmer with 15 ml of naphtha;
Waited 10 minutes;
Warmed the body;
Gently skimmed a flame close to the catalyst ;
BINGO!
The test is very conclusive. The warmer works really well in delivering heat.
I’m now ready to face this winter’s harsh temperatures.

I don't know the model of handwarmer but it is identified with a "Made in HongKong" !

See Picture:

I did not buy it myself.  It was probably my father's.  I'm sure it is very old... 30 + years !

I got a new one from eBay like that without the "made in Hong Kong" , the "new" catalyst could not light up, it was some sort of powder wrapped into an aluminum mesh.
I replaced the catalyst putting it in a spring and looks well fitted, I also did the carbon felt strip on top of the cotton. however it goes off after the first 20-30 minutes of use hanging on my chest inside my jacket. when I start it again it produces much more heat and stays on much longer.
Thanks
